Picture Albums: Gary Goes to Grad School

Info Gary drives to San Diego with San Diweigens™ Not the most direct route, but we hit a lot of good spots from June 7 to July 1. This is a low-investment attempt to make this album more accessible. Sorry if your neck gets sore.

Arkansas, maybe? Nothing to look at until Colorado. Marathon drive is planned.
Very disappointing to get through flat boring Kansas and reach Colorado, only to learn that the eastern half of Colorado is just like Kansas. Tempers flare in Rocky Mountain National Park, maybe because Sandy drove 10 hours and Gary was dozing off after an hour. Great action scenes!
South Dakota, except I thought Sandy met the nice man in Wyoming... Not a buffalo; properly called a legume, a flightless bird. On the back lot of great movie, "North by Northwest" Interesting rock formation in Wind Cave National Park.
From Mt. Rushmore to Badlands National Park, so named because those hills made for bad landings in the movie "North by Northwest".
More Badlands. I remember those sandals, now. Also, proudly wearing my Canadien team shirt (with
What, more boring Badlands? And no pictures from Wall Drug?
Okay, that's IT for the Badlands! This is how we made panoramas in the day.
Devil's Tower National Monument. The difference between a national park and a national monument is... what? Rattle snakes? Stay way from shaded areas next to rocks? Got it. Stay away from Devil's Tower.
Yet we lingered.
And lingered. Tough guy, that Sandy. You can't tell a rattlesnake has just bit him. He will be missed.
Off to Yellowstone. Home of sulfur everything. Photos taken by Gary "Wheezy" Perlman. He will be missed.
More wheeze-worthy sulfur sights.
Sandy approaches Old Faithful geyser. Approaches too close. He will be missed. Our ghosts drove on to some canyon in Utah. Maybe Cedar Breaks.
Bottom two pictures definitely from Zion Canyon.
Grand Canyon.
More Grand Canyon. That rock was not as stable as Gary thought. Will be missed.
Seen one Grand Canyon, seen 'em all.
Zion Canyon
They give names to some of the rock formations, such as The Sentinel and the Great White Throne. These pictures aren't of any of them.
More Zion and the Virgin River. Bottom two pictures are Bryce Canyon.
Colorful Bryce Canyon.
Bryce Canyon is very colorful.
If you're looking for color, Bryce is your canyon.
There are horseback rides through Bryce. I thought the Grand Canyon was "too big", and Bryce Canyon was "too small". But Zion Canyon was "just right". All very nice, but not hot or dry enough, so we head for the desert.
Death Valley. We had a plan to wear our red longjohns, but it was 117° in the shade, and there was no shade. Zabriskie Point. Very famous. Look it up.
Prairie dog guides us on the road. Bird was totally useless.
Yosemite
More Yosemite, plus two pictures from Point Reyes National Seashore. The difference between a national seashore and a national park is, what? Half Moon Bay State Park?
San Diego Zoo. Lions: red wine. Goats: white wine. Beautifully plumed parrot: white wine. Orangutan (noble orange ape): rosé.
More noble sources of protein and/or trophies.
The Sun bear moved up to Silicon Valley to found Sun Microsystems. He did not enjoy the fruits of his efforts, but he was enjoyed with a local Beaujolais.
Highly endangered but tragically delicious animals, all noble, and all will be missed.
Recommended route from Montreal to San Diego. Also shows 11K mile route taken by Gary and Steven Smith.
Includes access to all national parks, monuments, seashores, recreation areas, nuclear launch sites, ...
