Effects of Keyboard Design and Typing Skill on User Keyboard
Preferences and Throughput Performance
	Hans Brunner
	Rose Mae Richardson
[140/1984:267-271] Rating:0
[140/1984:267-271] Comments:I'm not really qualified to evaluate this
paper on keyboards, since I don't know the relevant literature. I tried,
but did not like the results.

Reducing Variability in Natural-Language Interactions with
Computers
	Elizabeth Zoltan-Ford
[140/1984:768-772] Rating:7
[140/1984:768-772] Comments:Well-designed, well-written paper, still
relevant to natural language design. It also uses a Wizard of Oz
methodology, so it complements the Green and Wei-Haas (1985) paper.

The Rapid Development of User Interfaces: Experience with the
Wizard of Oz Method
	Paul Green
	Lisa Wei-Haas
[140/1985:470-474] Rating:3
[140/1985:470-474] Comments:Useful insights into using the Wizard of Oz
methodology; somewhat dated as it is MS-DOS, character-based. It
complements the Zoltan-Ford(1984) paper.

Interface Style and Eclecticism: Moving Beyond Categorical
Approaches
	Dennis Wixon
	Michael Good
[140/1987:571-575] Rating:4
[140/1987:571-575] Comments:Mildly interesting discussion of interface
categories vs interface characteristics. Broader range and depth needed
to make this paper a "classic."

User-Computer Interface Requirements for Remote Access Data Bases
	Elizabeth A. Roop
	David R. Eike
	Christopher C. Heasly
[140/1987:973-977] Rating:3
[140/1987:973-977] Comments:Good, interesting results; questionable
validity, as data come from a survey of conference attendees on issues of
database query features. Introduction is weak, as it focuses more on
features of query interfaces rather than user interface issues. However,
it complements the Hewett (1989) paper.

Towards a Generic Strategy for Empirical Evaluation of Interactive
Computing Systems
	Thomas T. Hewett
[140/1989:259-263] Rating:7
[140/1989:259-263] Comments:Insightful, case-based strategy for choosing
evaluation techniques during the systems development life-cycle. Well
written.

Taking the "Task" Out of Task Analysis
	Janet L. Fath
	Randolph G. Bias
[140/1992:379-383] Rating:6
[140/1992:379-383] Comments:Very nice case studies and description of a
"workbook" using numerous tools in a task analysis. The biggest problem
is the missing data, as three of the five case studies had to be
terminated when their projects were cancelled or transferred, so only data
from the early development stages is available. Also, the "workbook"
appears to be IBM proprietary information since it does not appear in the
bibliography.

	Michelle A. Vincow

A Methodology and Encoding Scheme for Evaluating the Usability of
Graphical, Direct Manipulation Style Interfaces
	Donna L. Cuomo
[140/1993:1137-1141] Rating:5
[140/1993:1137-1141] Comments:A new, theory-based methodology for
evaluating protocols is introduced. Alone, this paper is too narrow; in
conjunction with other papers on evaluation, it would be excellent. It is
also weak on the evaluation of this new methodology. Only anecdotal and
sample data are provided.
