Hi Yang, Tao,

Thank you for your interest in this questionnaire.
I will try to provide you with information about it.
Some warnings:
  1. It is not a validated questionnaire,
so there will not be any data on its effectiveness,
 	validity, or reliability.
  2. It was developed a long time ago,
so my main method to recover information about it
is by checking tutorial my slides from way back then.

I found my printed presentation notes from CHI 97.
The PHUE is discussed in the section on heurisitc evaluation.
I mention Nielsen 93 10 heuristics, shown here:
 	http://oldwww.acm.org/perlman/question.cgi?form=NHE
I discuss alternate heuristics, with a list of Norman's 1990 principles:
  1. use both knowledge in the world and knowledge in the head
  2. simplify the structure of tasks
  3. make things visble: bridge the gulfs of execution and evaluation
  4. get the mappings right
  5. exploit the power of constraints
  6. design for error
  7. when all else fails, standardize
(from The Design of Everyday Things)

The PHUE (pronounced fooey, at least by me) is an adapted set of heuristics
  * different lists overlap
    - this is expected as they address the same topics
  * each has unique focuses
    - by accident of omission, or by design
  * lists can be merged for specific needs
    - the main purpose is to overcome the evaluator's lmitations
for attention to many dimensions at once
  * items can be added to address specific issues
    - e.g., evaluation of unusual application types
Some were added because of perceived limitations in,
say, Nielsen's lists. Those perceptions were mine,
so it is really just another ad hoc list of heuristics
based on other ad hoc sets of heuristics.

I hope this is useful to you. Good luck with your research.

I think that there are several ways to find people, and I'll see right now if they
find some people I think are missing from your list below:

From the HCI Bib hot topics page:
 	http://hcibib.org/canned.html
click on the first link, which happens to be for accessibility. Note the authors facet:

Julie Jacko - Georgia Tech
Andrew Sears - UMd Baltimore
Vicki Hansen - Univ. Dundee (UK)
Jacob Wobbrock - Univ Washington

You can also limit to just the ASSETS conference, although I think that
SIGCHI papers on accessibility are as prestigous.

The list of assets papers is here:

http://hcibib.org/bs.cgi?searchtype=pagination&query=c%2Eassets%2E%2A&rectype=papers&numrecs=25&sortkey=byDate&highlight=checked&options=checked&form=line&format=full&fullquery=+c%2Eassets%2E%2A+%28467%29+%2F+papers&toprecno=1&searchtype=pagination-first

and the top authors for that conference are listed there. The author affiliations are not listed,
but following a link to the acm site will show their affiliation.

Hope that helps...

Dear Emily,

I found the book quite irritating. Why didn't _I_ write the book? I should have.
But now I don't need to as Lazar et al is excellent and is a great contribution
to the field. So, really, I am thrilled by the book because it represents a lot
of work I will never need to do, and probably better than I ever would have done.

The Research Methods book presented a problem for me on my suggested readings page.
It is a general resource? an educational resource? an evaluation resource?
I could not decide, so setting a new precedent, I displayed it in all the categories.
It really should also go in the analysis/design section, too. I will need to think.

Here is the link to my suggested readings page:

Best wishes,

Gary Perlman
