I bought pagekeeper on the web last week because I wanted to do OCR
scanning of tiff images embedded in PDF for the HCI Bibliography
(http://www.hcibib.org). Pagekeeper does OCR on tiff, but it does not
do OCR on tiff in PDF document. I was misled by your description of
pagekeeper.

Can I return pagekeeper? It's way too slow on a P166 with 64M to be of
any use for anything else for me.

If I can't return it, can I sell it to someone else?

Gary,

Yeah, we went to a lot of effort to implement the "Styles" feature on Mac
OmniPage, just for situations like yours.

Unfortunately there is no corresponding feature, nor any way to simulate it,
in Windows Pro.

Gary,

The second part you can fix. Open the Control Panel, double click on
"Scanners and Cameras", and double click on your scanner. In the window that
opens, select the "Events" tab, and you'll be able to specify that the
scanner button launch Pro instead of the HP scanner software.

Okay. Good luck. Hope I'm not the only person in the world to use the
feature. I know that all-in-one functionality with few options meets
the needs of the vast majority of users. I love it for my scanner's
capture of pictures. For OCR, I maintain a bibliographic database
into which I scan 500-1000 records per year; after about 300 checks
with perl scripts, I check them against the original line-by-line:
	http://www.hcibib.org/

My other gripe was that the scan button on the scanner activated
the HP software, even when Omnipage was running. It would
be nice to have Omnipage intercept it. But then, others might
complain if you did.

Dear Caere Customer,

Thank you for your email regarding your Caere software.

What you will need to do is go to Tools>Options and to the Page Format tab. You will need to play with the settings in the Output Format section to see what works best with your document. Also, you should manually zone your text sections as text, rather than letting the software do it automatically. This will give you better accuracy.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call here at 408-395-8319 or contact us through email at techies@caere.com.

Regards,

Lucretia

Product: OmniPage Pro 9.X
Category: OCR
Scanner: HP 6100c
Hardware: Pentium

Problem Description:
I want to OCR-scan so that (1) a newline is inserted when there is a newline
in the image, and (2) no other newlines are inserted. I've used Caere sw on
a mac for years and was able to do this with an option to map newlines to
newlines. The closest I've come is to use a single column table zone, but
when I save it, Omnipage has inserted newlines which I can't turn off.
Basically, I need to figure out how to turn off a variaety of "smarts" so
that something like:

1. The dog jumped over the hill.
2. The big red dog jumped over the very large hill.

Gets recognized and saved as two lines (or paragraphs, if you prefer to call
it that).

Thanks. There are no options for what I was able to do on the Mac.
I've just ordered TextBridge to see if that will work for me.

Also, you should manually zone your text sections as text, rather than letting the software do it automatically. This will give you better accuracy.

Corporation and may be used without further compensation to you.

We're looking forward to your suggestions! Now, here are a few of the
stories we
received.

** From James E. Kronour of Kentwood, Michigan:
"My wife's father wrote many poems which were typed with a typewriter back
in 1954. She now in 1999 desires to prepare them to submit to a publisher.
Recently I purchased a scanner and OmniPage Pro 9.0. How sweet it is not to
retype all these poems. I can now scan them and then I am able to change to
any font and/or style to meet the requirements of a publisher."

** From James T. Herron of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania:
"On August 23, 1872, a former school teacher named Thomas Maxwell Potts
issued Volume I, Number 1 of The Canonsburg Herald, a weekly, Canonsburg
Pennsylvania's first newspaper. The early issues had just four pages and ran
mostly to patent medicine ads and articles copied from other newspapers.

"In November 1997, I used Caere's OmniPage Pro to reproduce items from these
early newspapers. The newspapers, printed on paper with at least some rag
content, were still in good condition, but the type had been set by hand and
the typefaces were archaic. Even so, OmniPage Pro chewed them up and spit
them out remarkably well. The program could even read some of the fancy
typefaces. The result was published as fourteen pages in the Jefferson
College Times, the Canonsburg historical society's quarterly.

"The old printer, Maxwell Potts, had done most of the work by hand. He hired
itinerant printers and on the evening the newspaper was printed, somebody
would have to help run the hand press. His diaries, which he kept until he
was very old, are still in existence, as are the files of his newspaper.

"He probably would expect the newspaper to have survived, but he would be
amazed and delighted that an optical character reading program would make it
possible for newspaper articles that he wrote a century and a quarter before
to be republished. Actually, it still is amazing."

** From a user who wished to remain anonymous:
"I have arthritis very badly in my hands. I work for the government, which
only last year started keeping everything on a LAN server. A task that fell
to me was typing a 500-page Policy and Procedures Manual into that server's
storage. I was simply not able to do it, nor could I afford to quit my job.
You likely have already guessed, but I scanned it ALL. The text, the tables,
all of it. OmniPage Pro worked like a whiz! My daughter lent me her Zip
drive and I got it all on it, took it to the office and uploaded it. I was
given three months originally for this project, but had it done in just over
a month. People sit and design programs, and maybe never know how much
people like me appreciate them."

GOOD ADVICE FROM CAERE'S SCANNER TEST LAB ENGINEERS

Each time Caere comes out with a new product or an update of an existing
product, engineers in our Scanner Test Lab have to make sure it works with
as many scanners as possible, starting with the most popular models. During
this process, they develop a lot of expertise about current scanners.

We asked two of those engineers, Bill Vassar and Ray Van Nuland, for any
tips they could offer that might prove helpful to scanner users. Here's what
they said:

Bill: The first thing you should do when you bring home any scanner is go
to that company's Web site and download the latest drivers for it. That's
what we do in the Lab. We rarely use what comes with the scanner. On those
Web sites there are a lot of bug fixes, patches, suggestions, problems to
look for, information -- it's really critical for people to do that.

Ray: My first suggestion is to read the directions. As an example, take one
of the current HP scanners. If you vary from the steps they lay out, the
scanner's not going to install. They include a huge poster in the box of
steps to follow, and it's there for a reason.

Speaking of HP, if you're setting up an older HP scanner on Windows 98,
you're going to need a newer version of their DeskScan software. If you use
anything else, you could run into some problems.

By the way, in Windows 98 there are some built-in drivers for HP and UMAX
scanners, but they don't have all of the features of the drivers that ship
with the scanners, so I wouldn't try using them with Caere products. Use the
drivers that come with the scanner, and, as we say, go to the manufacturer's
Web site for the latest.

Bill: People often ask about speeding up scans. Sometimes getting the
manufacturer's latest drivers will help in that area, too.

Ray: For speeding up scanning, I suggest making sure you have plenty of
free space on your hard disk and a good amount of memory. If you double your
memory, you'll probably double the speed of your scanner. Especially if you
only have about 32 MB of memory.

Bill: And for hard disk space, make sure you have at least 50 MB free.
People have a tendency to take a 2 GB hard disk and run it with 8 MB free.
Well, that's their swap file. Remember, you're dealing with 25 MB files or
bigger. Color scans can take an hour when the system has to do a lot of
swapping -- taking this chunk, put it here, go to this chunk and work on it,
go back and get the first chunk. You don't see this mentioned too often in
reviews.

Ray: Probably because the reviewers' machines have a ton of RAM. Also, we
should mention that in the case of NT, you should go to Control
Panel\System\Performance and set your paging file -- which is like a swap
file in Windows 3.1, 95 and 98 -- to 200 MB minimum and maximum. Your scans
will go much faster.

Bill: And keep your disk defragmented. Run your defragger once a month at
least. If you're doing a lot of scanning, run it once a week.

CAERE MY YAHOO! TIPS AND TRICKS

When you begin using your Caere MyYahoo! start page (see above), you'll
discover
frequent tips and tricks for getting the most out of Caere products. Here's
a recent example:

** Virtual Filing is its Own Reward **

A filing system is an aid to memory-an organized way of answering the
eternal question: "Now where did I put that?" Most systems are alphabetical
because even an overtaxed brain can remember that "G" comes after "F." The
potential weak link lies in remembering the applicable letter. Say you filed
an article on rising property taxes, and later you want to read it again. Is
the article filed under "P" for Property Tax, "T" for Taxes or "H" for Home
Expenses? Good or bad, a filing system is a representation of somebody's
brain, and as we all know, some brains work better than others.

PageKeeper Pro document management software simplifies the filing process
tremendously by indexing every word of your documents, and by creating a
database of links instead of actual documents. This results in two immediate
benefits for you:

-- You can quickly find any document just by remembering words it is likely
to contain. The property tax article would be quite easy to find. You would
ask PageKeeper to get files containing the words "property tax" and moments
later it would present you with a list of documents containing the words you
specified, with the words "property tax" highlighted in each document for
easy skimming.

-- You can have multiple links to the same document. This enables you to
organize document links in as many ways as you can think of, so documents
that have some relationship to each other are grouped together logically.
Remember, the actual documents never move, but the links to them -- and the
thumbnail images representing those links -- can be stored in as many
folders as you want. So you could have a thumbnail of the property tax
article in a Property Tax folder, a Taxes folder, a Home Expenses folder and
another folder called Letters to the Editor. Grouping the thumbnails
logically saves you search time and also, in the case of project folders,
can make sure you have all the material you need in one place.

PageKeeper Pro has other features designed to automate filing and retrieval.
For example, Smart Folders allow you to specify filing parameters such as
key words or phrases, file type, document size and date.

Suppose you'd like to have all documents containing the name of a client
called Smith Contracting filed in a single folder named "Smith Contracting"
within a parent folder named "Clients." PageKeeper Pro's Smart Folders
feature will place the documents in the correct folder automatically, saving
you time and effort. Now all of your existing documents related to Smith
Contracting are filed. And any future documents containing Smith Contracting
that come in will be filed as well -- without your having to lift a finger.

And you can eliminate the need to bring documents into PageKeeper Pro
manually by using Folder Watch(tm). This timesaving feature automatically
adds documents to
PageKeeper Pro as soon as the documents are saved to or moved to designated
folders on your hard disk.

PageKeeper Pro also tracks any changes that you make to your filed
documents. If you edit a report or touch up a photo, PageKeeper Pro
automatically updates the index and thumbnail with your changes. Or if you
move a document to another directory on your hard disk, PageKeeper Pro
always knows where it is. There's no need to manually re-index or worry if
you'll be able to find a document.
