First, thanks everyone, especially Austin, for working on this.
I think it all ended up being a little more work than was
initially imagined.

Second, I can't comment on most of it, because I don't really
have clear idea of how different this is from a (moderated)
listserver. Is it just something that mirrors a mailing list onto
the web and allows messages to be initiated from the web?
(If so, that's seems pretty cool. But probably most participants,
at least the active ones, will be participating through email.
And since email is pretty solid these days, the low-end
participant should probably be conceived of as a vt100 lynx
user on a 9600 modem, which means, by the way, that I, at
home, am an ideal usability testee.)

Third, I'm not sure if I'm actually on the chi announcements
list, and I should be . . .

Fourth, I think I can comment/confirm/approve the couple of
things here and I hereby do so:

> Steve Cherry has approved our having such a discussion associated with
"interactions" awards. Wayne Graves, manager of MIS at ACM, has asked
Michael Clore of acm.org to help us get it set up. Michael has agreed to
help a volunteer get registered and set up and maintaint the software.

Absolutely. There should be a link to and from the magazine's
home page, the magazine logo can go on the page, and so on.

> B. If the debate on "Quality and Interaction" has (in the
opinion of the Interactions Design Award Board) significantly
improved the judging process, the mediator (and any invited
discussion participants) can summarize their major
accomplishments of the year in a 6500 word essay to be
published in the Awards issue of the magazine ACM
interactions.

Again, absolutely, just keeping in mind that we can't do a
10+ page article in the magazine without there being something
visual in it.

Finally, we need some text that can be turned into a one-page
announcement for the magazine, I would guess that we won't
be close enough for the July issue (deadline would be, like, now)
so we should get something in about a 4 or 5 weeks for the
September issue.

Users will need the capability to navigate freely in spaces
with millions of objects. The current "nested folders"
metaphor will not be sufficient for this task.

Steve:

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate that e-mail is maybe more
accessible for some folk than the web. However, we are trying to push
the practice forward as much as possible, so we want to try the web
discussion. Maybe there is a way to take e-mail submissions into the
discussion somehow. Larry, what do you think?

I hope by now someone has added you to announcements.chi. If they have,
you'll know: announcements are a daily event.

I'd like to leave the text announcement for the magazine between you and
Tony.

Thanks alot,

Austin
