Hi Paul (and Jenny),

Good to hear from you... things are developing rapidly... and it
seems we will be able to go ahead with doing a session at CHI2002.
Jenny Preece will coordinate this effort --> we need to get a
proposal together by the end of the month.

I hope you would work with her and take on the the responsibility
to build a web site on this topic...
you and Putnam already have elements that I think are appropriate.
I see this a directly responding to Putnam's social capital concerns
and I know you have been closely tied with him in the Saguro group.
The specific issues are how online communities (and technology in
general) can be used to create stronger communities... what
evidence do we have, what success stories can we tell????

We do have to take the SIGCHI point of view and focus on design
issues that would be most appealing to SIGCHI members, but I have
a broad conception of what SIGCHI should address.

I think it would be very helpful in promoting discussion if you
created a website that could eventually wind up at SIGCHI like their
other topics (Accessibility, Kids, or Intercultural). Can you take
my starter list and add your favorites, then organize
it into a useful format... (I've included Gary Perlman in the
copy list so he can participate or guide this effort, and David
Novick who was also offering help).

Thanks for your offer to contribute - I hope this will
be an influential and importnant effort... Ben S

=======================================================
         *** Strengthening Communities ***

 (starter list for website)
(proposed vision statement - please revise as you like)

This website is a resource for those interested in
using information and commmunication technologies to
strengthen communities. In developed countries, such
an effort could restore the lost social capital
(willingness of neighbors/citizens to help each other
and work together) by building more effective social networks.
We believe that improved designs could better support social
networks, restore trust, increase reciprocity, support economic
development, promote civil society, and make for happier citizens.

In developing countries the ravages of famine, wars, natural
disasters, and oppressive rulers make the need to build
strong communities greater, but the resources smaller.

This website contains data about communities, reports on
existing online projects, organizations, and bibliographic resources.

Hi Paul (Ben, Gary and David),

It would be terrific to work with you on this project. I've kept up with
your work from afar and will enjoy working more closely with you and
learning about your projects as we work on Ben's suggested initiative.

I have a busy day full of meetings with students and teaching but I'll have
more time to look at the URLs Ben has circulated later in the week and
perhaps we can chat by phone on Friday, as I think it would be good to have
an initial brainstorm as soon as possible? What do you think? Hopefully by
then Gary and David may be on board too.

best wishes jenny

YES indeed... amazing amazing amazing!!!

and great to see this web site come to life. I'll let Jenny, Paul and Doug
Schuler decide how to evolve this website. My own preference is to try to keep
the focus narrow - dealing with how information and communications technologies
helps build stronger real-world communities. I am particularly interested in
solid research that identifies how and how much it helps.

So additional items might be in a category of 'Research' that included
relevant Pew Internet studies, Bob Kraut's work, Norman Nie's studies, Jeff
Cole's work (UCLA),....

I'll get the other groups started on collecting web sites, so when you get
back from DisneyWorld we can do a few more...let us know when you are back...
thanks again.... Ben S

Hi Ben and all,

I am, per presidential instructions, on my way to Disney World
to boost the U.S. economy. I think I'll need a sedative to fly.

I am not very active in this area, but if I can contribute
to your infrastructure, that would be great.

The pages like kids intercultural, and accessibility moved off the SIGCHI
site some time ago, and the SIGCHI site now links to the HCI Webliography.

Here is an HCI Webliography page I made from the links below:
	http://hcibib.org/communities/
There could be more categories and more multiple listings, but you
get the idea. Click on Suggest-a-Link to add new links (I review these,
so they won't show up for a few days).

Or, you might have had something entirely different in mind.
Or you might have suggestions about how to improve the page above
(and perhaps help out the other HCI Webliography pages).

Peace,

Gary

>
>

> Networked communities are design to support the local physical
communities. They
> deliberately acknowledge physical, political and communal aspects of the
local
> community and build virtual facilities. For example, local political
events are
> usually marked. They may also provide a strong basis for rallying
political
