Hi,

turing has been very slow for over a week.

turing is also running out of space, with a period of no space available last weekend.

It's hard to update hcibib.org.

Perhaps some processes are out of control?

Hello Gary,
I got your message about the hcibib site on turing.
I would like to set you up with a new hosting account within our newer envi=
ronment. We are in the process of moving all sites off of turing and onto =
this new server.
Would it be OK for me to setup a new account for you there and assist you i=
n moving your hcibib site off turing and onto this new server?
Unfortunately you will not be able to keep the @turing.acm.org email addres=
s. If you need, I can set you up with an alternate email address to use =
within our Google Apps for Education environment.

Thanks
Adam

Response time is very good today.

Still, I assume that you mean that t eventually ove hcibib.org onto a new server, so I will try that to the best of ny abilities. I have been on disability for a while, so I am a little concerned if I am up to it.

I think I would like to see if I can set things up in a shadow environment and see if I can get it to work. With dozens of ksh and perl scripts, I fear it will not be easy, but if it has to be done...

For email, I can redirect perlman@acm.org from turning.acm.org to wherever. It's director@hcibib.org that I am concerned about. I have been using pine for years, but it's nothing special.

I am not sure where to begin. I guess I would get an account on some machine, do some file transfers ,see what works, fix what doesn't, and eventually redirect hcibib.org to the new machine. Yes?

Hi,
You can still keep director@hcibib.org that just forwards to perlman@turing.acm.org
All we need to know is where to forward that address to.

Yes, what we would do is setup a new hosting account for you at hcibib.hosting.acm.org
Then you will have access to a cpanel console for this account, as well as SSH access for this account. You can manage most of your environment from the cpanel console.
I would park the domain on this account so that hcibib.org will work from here when you are ready, then all we have to do is change DNS and point it to the new server.

Thanks

Yes?

Hi Gary,
Here is the new account information.
Let me know if you got the system generated email with the password in it.

You can access your hosted area by going to
http://perlman.hosting.acm.org/cpanel

Your site will run as http://perlman.hosting.acm.org

When you are ready for us to change DNS for hcibib.org just let me know.

You can access the server via SSH on PORT 7822 SSH does not run on starndard port 22

Thanks
Adam

Thanks. I have changed my password and logged in using SSH.

I will work on a plan for the transfer. I'll probably have questions over the next few weeks.

q1: How can I change my shell to ksh, which does not appear to be on hosting.acm.org? I have been using ksh for over 30 years, so switching would be a bother for issuing commands, but it will also affect shell scripts. At the least, could I get a symlink added from /bin/ksh to /bin/bash, replacing the existing symlink to /etc/alternatives/ksh, which does not exist? Then I would not need to change as many scripts?

q2: From my SSH window on turing, I can open a File Transfer window, but on hosting.acm.org, it hangs, which is bad because that was my planned way of tranferring files. Any ideas?

q3: Where will I receive mail to director@hcibib.org? When I sent mail from it, it appeared to come from perlman@sf11ca18.a2hosting.com, so I'd like to know how to make that look prettier, like director@hcibib.org, or almost anything other than perlman@sf11ca18.a2hosting.com.

Hi Gary,
I will look into giving your account ksh access.

Q2. You can ssh from turing.acm.org to perlman@perlman.hosting.acm.org:7822

Q3. Right now director@hcibib.org is setup within our email forwarding environment to go to perlman@turing.acm.org.
If you want to use the email address director@hcibib.org directly from this environment, we can set that up. We would just need to remove it from our email forwarding and set it up to go directly to this server with a new MX record. All the email for your hcibib.org and your perlman.hosting.acm.org can be configured through the cpanel console.

Thanks
Adam

I couldn't quite figure that one out. What I meant was that when I use SSH =
from my Windows desktop to access turing, I have a shell window and I can c=
lick on an icon to open up a file transfer window. When I was connected to =
perlman.hosting.acm.org, I clicked on the icon and the file tranfer window =
opened but never connected. I am using the Windows ssh client from ssh.com.

Basically, I would like to drag and drop directories from turing to the new=
 host.

I do not know about MX records, but I guess that can wait.

Hi,
Are you using the "tectia - ssh terminal" from ssh.com ?
I download it and setup a profile in it, and when I connect and click the file transfer window, I see the remote listing.

Let me know

Thanks
ADam

The terminal window is already connected on port 7822, but the file transfer window is not listing files.

Thanks for following up, Adam.

I think Tectia is their commercial product. I'm guessing that it would cost money, so I might get it for the 45-day trial period for file transfers. Longer term, I guess I'll switch to something like http://www.putty.org/ (rather than devote time to finding fix for my ancient SSH client. Of course, putty might not offer a gui file transfer option. Can you suggest a free alternative?

Maybe I could use ftp? I tried to connect to perlman.hosting.acm.org, but I could not connect. Maybe I was using the wrong port to perlman.hosting.acm.org, but I could not connect. Maybe I was using the wrong port.

Gary

I am also using FileZilla. What host and port should I use?

Longer term, I guess I'll switch to something like http://www.putty.org/ (rather than devote time to finding fix for my ancient SSH client. Of course, putty might not offer a gui file transfer option. Can you suggest a free alternative?

What I meant was that when I use SSH from my Windows desktop to access turing, I have a shell window and I can click on an icon to open up a file transfer window. When I was connected to perlman.hosting.acm.org, I clicked on the icon and the file tranfer window opened but never connected. I am using the Windows ssh client from ssh.com.

We would just need to remove it from our email forwarding and set it up to go directly to this server with a new MX record. All the email for your hcibib.org and your perlman.hosting.acm.org can be configured through the cpanel console.
