Shazam! the idea came to me last night. I've been wondering how we could
weigh in not as individuals, but as a group. We could do it as an extension
of sharing our feedback emails to vendors.

After reading what someone has submitted to a vendor then forwarded to LUII,
we could do one of three things:

1 - forward the email to the vendor with "I agree" and your name and
institution

2 - forward the parts of the email you agree with to the vendor with "I
agree with these parts" and your name and institution

3 - forward the email to the vendor with "I disagree and this is my take on
the issue . . ." and your name and institution (then share this with the
rest of LUII so we can have the benefit of your insight as well).

This can be a way to feel our efforts are more than pebbles thrown into the
canyon.

Cheers,
Joan

Hello to all of you,
This is a fantastic forum! I feel privileged to be allowed into this
discussion. Before beginning my current career I was a working librarian,
both in academic and special libraries. I would like to assure you that I am
not immune or insensitive to your concerns. I view my job as one of service
to all of you. In the few days (3) that I have been reading your emails I
have already gained new insight into what I need to do to better serve you.
It may come as a shock to many of you, but it is not easy to know what we
need to do to make a better product for you.
I still am not sure what matters. As far as I know, we are the only company
that indexes comprehensively enough so that you are offered a searchable
field for the physical description of an article. Does anyone use this? We
are creating a new GUI that will offer this as a drop-down box for the user
to click, but right now the user has to know how to use our field codes to
limit the search. Does anyone still do mediated searching? Can we expect
your patrons to figure out that if they want an interview, (this can be
specified through our article contents field), that contains a portrait,(por
in the physical description field), they can find it instantly in any of our
databases by using field codes? Does any of this matter? Whenever our sales
reps go out on calls they report that all anyone is asking for is more
full-text titles. I care about what you all want. Please let me know.

I think the heuristics Jakob Nielsen published
(http://www.useit.com/papers/heuristic/heuristic_list.html) work for
virtually *any* type of interface in any environment. Granted, the
heuristics were probably developed for software applications, but they can
be applied to web interfaces as well. The heuristics are meant to be
guidelines or principles for good interface design - once these are
identified and resolved you get into testing with users to identify the
"real world" problems (and the library-specific issues).

Hi Joan -

This is an interesting idea. There are so many great creative avenues we
can explore in creating this dialog with the vendors. We should
definitely keep this in mind as we get organized and set priorities.

Brian suggested using the existing heuristics and I agree that this is
an excellent starting place. My personal opinion is that we first have
to define what good usability is in the library environment. Then we can
rate products and contact vendors.

So, how should we go about defining usability standards for our unique
culture? Are the heuristics workable for us?

Along these lines, I wonder if it would be possible to develop a rating
system for various databases, etc. based on criteria such as ease of use,
interface design, etc. Perhaps like a golf score e.g. 5 categories with
ten points in each category -- the lower the total number the better the
database --
This may be helpful to potential purchasers as well as an incentive to the
developers.

Liz asks:
>How many here have done usability studies in their library for sites or
>pages that your library is creating?

We have just begun our first web usability study. I am the library's
web designer, and I studied usability testing in library school, so
I've been eager to do some testing on our site.

We are a small library (4 reference librarians, me, ass't dir., and
the director), with about 1200 students. The library web site is
designed to be the students' research starting point, and I've been
very curious to know if it's working the way it's been designed.

I came up with 8 questions that make the students find information on
the library site (hours; finding the catalog; who's the architecture
librarian; where can you find a web site on X topic [answer on our
subject page]). It was kind of tough to keep the questions only
testing the web site and not the catalog or a database.

The testing phase involves a tester, an observer, and a student. The
tester reads the introductory and closing material plus each
question. The observer takes notes and writes down what the student
does. The tester and observer are librarians; I am *not* involved in
the testing.

We are testing 6 students (plus one student worker while we tested
the test), and we give them a $10 gift certificate to the Bookstore
for their trouble. The test takes 30-40 minutes.

It's too early to comment on the results except that the four
students tested so far have had the same experience -- certain
questions are easily answered, and each has gotten stuck on one
particular question.

I've done this pretty much by Jakob Nielsen's "book" -- ie, test only
a few people, keep the questions simple, keep the designer out of the
testing -- and I found two resources to be invaluable in creating my
usability test:

Usability testing in a library Web site redesign project
Susan McMullen
Reference Services Review, Vol 29 Issue 1, 2001

I hope to write more about this, and/or put some information on a web
site somewhere -- in the meantime, I would be happy to answer
questions about this project. I look forward to hearing what others
are doing!

Liz,
There's a good article in Reference Services Review (If you subscribe

Elena, usually 'research' comes after the fact. Only the largest
companies can afford to do any published research on interfaces.
Part of the problem is keeping up with changes to the state of the
art while converting to a new interface. It's easy to get badly behind
while upgrading to a well researched interface that was tried and
true.

And, sometimes interfaces that grow out of research have no basis
in reality at the time. We worked with one that was really ready for
an xml implementation. Unfortunately, the Mac and Windows were
just being rolled out at the time, and Gopher was state of the art.

Besides, it wouldn't be fair to take research away from the
professors.

And you left out the last bit, of .."add a few web search
> engine tricks, shake, and add an olive?)"... and drink <grin>.

Friends,

a couple of days ago Liz asked to share pages:

"How many here have done a usability study for a product created outside
of the library?

It would be wonderful some of you would share the protocols/guidelines
you used for these studies.

I would be happy to add extra pages to the LUII site: Guidelines for
In-house Library Usability Studies"

At the Department of Library and Information Studies, University of
Applied Sciences in Hamburg, our students do projects on the usability
of search engines, library websites and OPACs. Methods we use are
usability testing, heuristic evaluation, cognitive walk throughs and,
sometimes, questionnaires. As a rule our results and documentation of
methods are public in the web - however: in German. As we worked as a
sponsor of the European project EULER one of our documentations is in
English. You might be interested to visit the site:

We are in the planning stage of setting up virtual reference. I would like
to know if anyone is using (or plans to use) Blackboard software in this
capacity. We have been asked to look into it as an option.

Thank you.
