Equipment Budget for NSF RIA Grant A Unified Framework for Semi-Structured Information Gary Perlman, Assistant Professor, 292-2566 Computer and Information Science This grant requires matching contributions up to $10,000 for equipment. 2 Sun ELC workstation (diskless) $6000 ($ 4995 * 2 - 40% discount) 1 Sun IPX workstation (19" color) $9300 ($15495 - 40% discount) 1 HP 660 Meg Hard Disk $2550 File Server and Network Hardware $1850 (see calculations below) ====== $19700 TOTAL HARDWARE IN GRANT ====== 9300 NSF Share 10400 OSU Share ($3467 * 3) File Server & network connection (supports 12 workstations and 6 disks) 1 Sun SPARCStation 2 $9300 ($15495 - 40% discount) 1 Presto network card $1800 ($ 2995 - 40% discount) ===== $11100 Hardware to connect 2 workstations and disk is over 1/6 of $11,100, or at least $1,850. NSF CISE/IRIS Program Director Howard Moraff suggested that OSU's contribution include the full amount for "File Server and network Hardware" because it is a fraction of a physical unit and he thought NSF reviewers might not respond favorably to funding fractions. Rather than share the subsequent items on a percentage basis, I propose that the OSU contribution be slightly larger than NSF's to (1) simplify the budget, and (2) strengthen the indication of OSU's support for the grant. The alternative is to evenly cost share half of $19,700 ($9,850 split among CIS, Engineering, and the University is $3,283), which would save each OSU unit $184. I think the simplification and increased support is worth that.
